Hypnotherapy works. Approved by the American Medical Association (AMA) nearly 50 years ago, hypnosis is used by major medical centers, sports teams, and corporations. Although hypnotherapy is not a "magic bullet", It creates change efficiently and effectively and, because it works at the source, success is lasting.
Hypnotherapy goes beyond knowledge, insight, and willpower to create lasting change in the Feeling Brain, as opposed to the Thinking Brain. The Thinking Brain is the seat of knowledge. It is where we analyze, plan, and make decisions. When it comes to being a happier and more balanced person, there is no significant correlation to what is processed in the Thinking Brain. That is why a person can have a Ph.D. in nutrition and also have an eating disorder, be a priest and have an affair, or have tremendous insight into one's childhood and still repeat dysfunctional patterns of behavior. Therefore, knowledge and insight are not enough. To create lasting positive change, we have to go to the source, the Feeling Brain.
The Feeling Brain is our emotional core. It is where we experience how we feel in relation to a person, an idea, or an activity, and these feelings are what drive our behavior. Willpower is often employed to change behavior. But since willpower is a function of the Thinking Brain it ultimately surrenders to the stronger drives of the Feeling Brain. Therefore, we must alter the Feeling Brain for real and lasting change.
Think of your challenge as a boulder blocking your way on your path. Willpower can only enable you to lift the boulder and carry it so you can move forward, but it doesn't allow you to get rid of it. The boulder just keeps getting harder to carry. When you just can't carry it any more, you drop the boulder right back in front of you. Hypnotherapy, on the other hand, enables you to remove the boulder, in a lasting way.
When you are trying to create change from your Thinking Brain it is like watching a movie of yourself struggling with the boulder; you can see clearly how much easier it would be if you would just get rid of the darn thing. However, even though you have this awareness all you can do is, with frustration, watch the movie of you struggling. Hypnotherapy, however, enables you to get into the film's editing/writing room, the Feeling Brain, and re-write the script of you without the boulder.
Hypnotherapy accesses the Feeling Brain naturally and easily. Hypnotherapy accesses the Feeling Brain by using the natural and familiar state of trance. People go in and out of trance states all day and don't realize it. Laughing or crying in a movie, being "lost in thought", being deeply engrossed in a book, these are all light trance states. We create trance by deep focus, and in this state the Feeling Brain becomes open to suggestion and change.
Hypnotherapy establishes new neural pathways in your Feeling Brain that support your success. How we feel and react to what needs to occur for goal achievement is a result of established brain patterns, or neural pathways. These neural pathways can help or hinder us in reaching goals. Upon entering the natural trance state, clients address and change the feeling states that block their success. With hypnotherapy clients diminish those neural pathways that sabotage success and then establish new neural pathways that support reaching their stated goals with ease and speed.
You are always in control. In trance the client is always in control. Hypnosis can't make you cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog, unless you want to! Like being lost in thought as you drive down the road you cruise along on "auto-pilot" but if something happens, like someone cutting you off, you act immediately to take care of yourself. The same is true with hypnosis. In the natural trance state you have control to choose to accept a suggestion or not.
Let's clarify what is happening in hypnosis stage shows. The people up on stage are in a natural hypnotic trance state, but all that means is they are very open to accepting and believing any suggestion the hypnotist makes that they are willing to accept. If the hypnotist were to suggest something contrary to their morals or ethics, they would either ignore him/her, or they would "emerge" from hypnosis on their own.
Surprising to most people is that in the trance state you are aware of hearing the hypnotherapist's voice and the environment around you. You are not in a sleep state as many imagine it to be. Actually you are highly focused and you realize that if you wanted to, at any point in the session you could walk out of the room. However, if you are like most people, the experience feels so relaxing it's preferable to stay in that state, not leave it! But if you wanted to, you could do so at any time.
Hypnotherapy works for most everyone, that is, people with an IQ of at least 70, no severe mental disorders, and over the age of 7. Absolutely everyone who meets the above criteria can be hypnotized to some degree, if they want to be. It is true that not all techniques work for everyone. Therefore, it is important for you to find a hypnotherapist with enough training and experience so they can find the techniques that will work best for you.
Hypnotherapy is effective even for the very analytical. Analytical individuals experience hypnotherapy easily. Success with hypnosis has to do with your willingness to focus and follow directions.
If you feel a bit skeptical, that's okay. Many clients were skeptical at first. However, their skepticism went away when they experienced positive changes in their lives.

A Mom Speaks About Her HypnoBirthing Classes |
| "I have to be honest...I'm sorry classes are over. In some ways the weekly sessions have been my grounding tool.... A place where I can connect with MY truth about my birthing beliefs and vision. Being around all of you every Friday has been invaluable...I love the like-mindedness. I leave there feeling so empowered about what is around the corner. Lately more and more people are asking what technique I'm going to use and when I mention HypnoBirthing® the response is usually, "hah! You have no idea...it simply hurts. Don't be a martyr...go for the drugs." It's really getting on my nerves, why people feel they need to place their own judgment on what I'm doing. I feel very confident in our approach and fortunately I have a WONDERFUL husband who is RIGHT by my side every step of the way! I want to thank you so much for offering this class and all of the support you have shown through additional resources and always being so open to guiding us in any way we need. Thanks again!" |

My overall opinion of HypnoBirthing is: Wonderful! |
| Every pregnant mother should be required to take this course. I used HypnoBirthing for my 3rd birth and it was far superior to my other two experiences. I would consider having a fourth just to go through the unbelievable experience again. |

Mike and I tell EVERYONE what an amazing experience it was. |
Our little blessing, Luke was born March 19th. We had the most amazing experience. I have been known to describe it as "fun" though I get the craziest looks when I say that.
The labor lasted about 8 hours and we did it totally natural, not even Tylenol. My birth partners, Mike and my dad Isaac, were by my side and were the best foundation (and cheering section) a girl could ever ask for! With them and my HypnoBirthing meditation CD I was unstoppable!! I had my headphones on the entire time!
My mother, mother in law and my two sisters were able to witness the event, it was amazing. Luke breast fed within half an hour of being born....quite the rock star!
Mike and I tell EVERYONE we know what an amazing experience it was. We feel so blessed to have been introduced to this method and will continue to sing its praises...thanks so much!!!! |

My doctor said he's always seen very good results with HypnoBirthing. |
I was very impressed with the concept – our bodies truly were meant to give birth. My mindset changed completely after taking the class and this definitely changed my birthing experience. I had the most calm and wonderful birth of my son. I didn’t know that it could be so calm and wonderful. Because I was so relaxed, I was able to breathe my son down and then push for 36 minutes (my first time giving birth – not bad!). My doctor said he's always seen very good results with HypnoBirthing. |

The most incredible and empowering experience of my life,
that created
an amazing bond between Mom, Dad and baby!! |
I am so thankful to HypnoBirthing for opening my eyes to a safe, easy and comfortable natural birth- one which I could do in the comfort of my own home. This was a blessing. The most incredible and empowering experience of my life!! And one that created an amazing bond between Mom, Dad and baby!! |

The benefits of having such a birth have been amazing for both me and my baby. |
After giving birth naturally twice before this third birth experience was the most fantastic gift for me. My first two experiences were completely medically led - I had to have forceps deliveries with episiotomies and much trauma for both me and my two daughters, and an epidural with my second child, after an 18hour labor!. Since attending the HypnoBirthing course, the birth of my son - this last experience, was unbelievably beautiful! The labor progressed so quickly, which I believe was only due to the fact that I was totally relaxed through each contraction and the rests in between. I could literally feel the baby moving down with each breath. I can honestly confirm - having had the past two experiences that I've had - that tension prolongs labor and increases pain, whereas relaxation has the direct (extreme) opposite effect! The benefits of having such a birth have been amazing for both me and my baby. He is so much more relaxed and content compared to the first few weeks with my first two. (One might say this is because I have more experience this time around - I definitely say it's due to the peaceful birth experience we had!). The first time I heard him cry was when he was given the vitamin K injection. My recovery was incredibly quick. Not having had to recover from stitches and the after effects of an epidural, 12 hours after delivery, I literally felt as though I'd never given birth! My advice to moms-to-be: use the HypnoBirthing material to the best of your ability; trust your body and know that the only control you have in the process is to relax! |

What an amazing experience!! |
What an amazing experience!! Within a handful of surges and some bearing down we welcomed a baby girl into the world on September 20th at 5:34 pm. She arrived so quickly that the doctor even missed the birthing! Her name is Hayley Donna Brown and she weighed
7lbs 12 oz and was 20.75 in length. What an incredible experience!!!
I have been told by many people that I was “lucky” and that birthing is never that “easy”. Well, I say that all birthing experiences are individual. I feel that practicing HypnoBirthing had a major part to play in my birthing outcome. I will again utilize the HypnoBirthing techniques should I be blessed with another pregnancy. |

I just want to attest to the difference between pushing and breathing the baby down. |
I just want to attest to the difference between pushing and breathing the baby down. I have done it both ways and let me tell you – breathing down was WAY better. My husband was totally shocked when our second baby came out because he was expecting a long bout of pushing just like with our first baby (pushed for 50mins with the first). During my second birthing I went with my body and started breathing down with surges for a little while (don’t know how long, maybe 15 mins?). Suddenly the midwife prompted me that he was right there and if I gave a push he’d come out. Up until that point, I had no idea how close I was to birthing my baby but I knew he was moving down. With her suggestion about pushing (being in my hypnotic and very suggestible state), of course I pushed HARD and got his little head born. One more hard push and got his little body born (ok, not so little body – 10lbs!). But the breathing down part was so peaceful and SO different than the forceful pushing I had done for my daughter three years prior. Breathing down felt like I wasn’t doing anything at all, just getting out of the way (staying relaxed) to let my uterus, my birth path, and my baby do what they needed to do. How liberating! Even with the two hard pushes I gave at the end, I was so grateful that I’d learned about birth breathing. What a difference it made. Thank you! |

Affirming our own power |
Most helpful to me were the affirmations with the historical context as a way of reformatting my mind for what birth could be. The visualizations as well as the overall attitudes were of great benefit. We had planned for 3 hours of active labor and that’s how it was. The other portion was spent at the park, out to lunch, etc. and was easily manageable. Although “relaxation” and “pain free” did not apply to us, we gained a great deal from the class – affirming our own power and had the birth experience we had wanted from the start. (Our first baby was a c-section and the second was VBAC at a hospital.)
Thanks for your courage and energy in sharing these ideas with the world. |

HypnoBirthing influences parenting |
To further comment on HypnoBirthing, I really feel that HypnoBirthing has influenced the type of parents we are. Olivia, my daughter is truly a “HypnoBirthing Baby”, she is a very calm and gentle little girl. So often people comment that she is like “an old soul” and marvel at her demeanor. I always knew the type of birth I wanted to have and the type of parent I wanted to be. HypnoBirthing really empowered me to be strong in my convictions about birthing and parenting.
I honestly feel that our HypnoBirthing experience with Olivia did not end at her birth; I feel HypnoBirthing opened a beginning that will last between my daughter and me forever. By learning to trust my natural instinct during pregnancy and birth, I have been confident in doing so as a parent. I know what is best for my baby, I know what she needs and by learning to listen to myself, I am better at listening to her. I feel so in tune with feeling her needs and often anticipating them before she even expresses them. My husband was so in awe of the power and strength I had during Olivia’s birth, and he is still in awe today at how I mother her. His companionship during her birth has spilled over into the type of father he is; he is very paternal with her and is also very in tune with her needs much more so than I notice with most fathers. He also trusts my decisions with her implicitly; he seems as though he is privy to the secret of the bond between mother and baby which so many fail to recognize. I cannot thank you enough for this course, you are not only changing birthing, I really believe that you are helping to change families as well! |

The perfect addition to our family! |
I just want to thank you. I am not sure that my words will reflect my depth of gratitude, but I hope by sharing my experiences that you will understand my appreciation. I was so completely relaxed that my husband commented to the nurse that my contractions had really slowed down--. Well, because I was on the monitors, she could tell that they in fact had not, and I was relaxed enough to tell him that they had not and I was able to stay completely relaxed. When each surge came, because of the deep breathing techniques, the surges felt good. They did not hurt. I was so relaxed and the breathing so long and slow, that I felt that my body was working in perfect harmony with each surge. It wasn't even work--these surges felt good, comfortable and right. I had never experienced such a deep relaxation during labor before, nor have I ever experienced surges that felt comfortable or good when my labor had progressed this far. As I relaxed I decided I wanted to birth this baby in the tub instead of on a bed. I ended up moving back to the bath just in time for the birth.--Just 2 surges and his birth was complete. I was so grateful for the techniques I learned. This was by far my fastest and most relaxed birth, except perhaps at the very end when the baby moved down so fast, and those last 2 surges when he was birthed. With each of my previous births, I could feel exactly when the baby moved into transition--that is when I would have great difficulty breathing through the transition. It seemed like one long 20 minute consecutive surge.
But with this baby, the breathing techniques and imagery that I used worked so well, that even now, I honestly do not know when the baby went into transition. That was an amazing miracle in itself! Also, I never felt the crowning sensation. After the first strong surge, my midwife said that with the next surge, he would be born. I did not know if he would be or not because I could tell he was not crowning, but, my son was indeed completely birthed with the next surge--that was it! But the best part occurred after his birth. As I contemplated this precious gift of a son I had just received, I realized that my life was indeed perfect. He has been the perfect addition to our family. He came at the perfect time and in his own perfect way. Knowing he was coming to our family helped me to stretch and grow as a mother in ways I doubt I would have otherwise. It was at that moment that I remembered our first HypnoBirthing session and the truth of what we talked about, what I had believed and had to hope for became an absolute reality--my faith became knowledge in an instant: that this baby was indeed the perfect addition to our family, he is exactly what our family needed and he came at the perfect time in his own perfect way.
It could not have been any better. I have never felt more confident and happy as a mother. That sweet experience has helped me to be a mother of 6 children and find complete joy in the process--there is no fear or worries. I highly recommend to all my friends having a baby to come to your classes. If there is another baby down the road, enrolling in your class will be the gift I will give to myself. Thank you again. |
